「shade」と「shadow」の定義
二つは似ているので、英英辞書から定義を確認してみます。
まずは「shade」から。
shade【ʃeɪd】 an area that is dark and cool under or behind something, for example a tree or building, because the sun’s light does not get to it （Oxford Learners’ Dictionaries）
このように「shade」は、「何かの下や後ろの部分にできる、陽の光が届ない、暗い陰の部分」です。
例文を見てみましょう。
Let’s move into the shade. （木陰に入ろう）
Let’s find a table in the shade. （陰に入っているテーブルを探そう）
Without the shade from trees, Earth would get too hot to live on. （木陰がなかったら、地球は生きられないほど暑くなっていただろう）
次に「shadow」を見てみます。
shadow【ˈʃædəʊ】 the dark shape that somebody/something’s form makes on a surface, for example on the ground, when they are between the light and the surface （Oxford Learners’ Dictionaries）
一方、「shadow」はこのように、「光によって、地上などの表面にできた暗い形」とあります。
