「head=頭」ではない
さて、私たちは単語帳で「head=頭」で覚えます。
もちろん、全くの間違いではないのですが、「head」の定義はこうです。

Oxford Learners’ Dictionaries
:the part of the body on top of the neck containing the eyes, nose, mouth and brain
そう、つまり「head」は首から上の部分で、目や鼻、口、そして脳も含む全てです。つまり、顔も「face」の一部分なのです。
そして「日本語では窓から顔を出す」とよく表現しますが、その場合、「顔」だけではありません。「首から上部分」を出しているわけです。
そのため、英語ではこう表現します。
また、日本語では「首を縦に振る」、「首を横に振る」と言いますが、これも実際に振っているのは「首から上部分」ですので、英語では「head」で表現します。

また、これも表現の違いですが、日本語の「目が回る」は、英語だと「headが回る」と言います。

確かにイメージを見ると、回っているのは「head」なのかもしれませんね。
