このように「gaze」は、称賛や感嘆の気持ちが伴ったポジティブなニュアンスの「見る」で、星空を眺める時などにもよく使います。

watch
「watch」は意識的に動いているものを一定時間、じっと見つめる時に使います。テレビなどが正しく「watch」の感覚です。

see
「see」は上の二つと違い、自然と(無意識に)視界に入ってくる時に使います。「見える」の感覚。そのため、暗闇などで何も見えなかったら、「I can’t see anything.」で表現します。

stare
「stare」はネガティブなニュアンスを含み、ジロジロと眺める時に使います。「無遠慮さ」があり、失礼な響きがあります。
