the elephant in the room

:a problem or question that everyone knows about but does not mention because it is easier not to discuss it
見て見ぬ振りをしていること、誰もが認識しているのに触れないこと
▶︎部屋の中にいるゾウはみんな見えているのに、それに触れない様を表しています。
Ex) We can’t ignore the elephant in the room.

reach for the stars

:to try to be successful at something that is difficult
困難なことをやり遂げようとすること
Ex) My father always told me that I should reach for the stars.

under the weather

:if you are or feel under the weather, you feel slightly ill and not as well as usual
具合が悪い、体調が悪い
▶︎悪天候の中、船上で船酔いをすることが語源です。
Ex) I’m under the weather.
▶︎「I feel under the weather.」などとも表現できます。

a big mouth

:a person who talks a lot, especially about him- or herself, and who cannot keep secrets
口が軽い、おしゃべりな、秘密を漏らす
▶︎日本語の「大口を叩く」意味での「ビッグマウス」は和製英語です⚠️
Ex) She has a big mouth.

over the moon

:extremely happy and excited
とても幸せな
Ex) I’m over the moon.

one after another

:first one person or thing, and then another, and then another, up to any number or amount
次から次へと、次々に
Ex) I keep getting emails from customers one after another.

It’s never too late.

:It is never impossible (to do something), regardless of how old one is. The phrase is typically used to encouragesomeone to try to accomplish something, especially late in life or long after it is usually accomplished by others.

:(informal or humorous) to die
Ex) When I kick the bucket you’ll be able to live on my life insurance.

have a frog in one’s throat

声が出ない、声がしわがれている
have, etc. a frog in your throat
:to lose your voice or be unable to speak clearly for a short time
▶︎中世、喉が詰まるのは、飲んだ水の中のカエルや魚の卵が孵り、それが口から逃げ出そうとして気管に詰まっている、などと考えられていたという説があります。
Ex) He has a frog in his throat.

コツを掴む
get the hang of something
:to learn how to do or to use something; to understand something
Ex) It seems difficult at first, but you’ll soon get the hang of it.

go with the flow

流れに身を任せる、周りに身を委ねる
go with the flow
:to be relaxed and not worry about what you should do
Ex) Oh, did you want to stay at the park for awhile longer? / No, it’s OK. I’ll just go with the flow.

the last straw

もう我慢の限界だ、堪忍袋の尾が切れた
the last straw
:the last in a series of bad events, etc. that makes it impossible for you to accept a situation any longer
Ex) You’re late again.This is the last straw.

a big fish (in a small pond)

井の中の蛙（かわず）だ、お山の大将だ
a big fish (in a small pond)
:an important person (in a small community)
（小さい池の中の、大きな魚のニュアンス）
Ex) In school she was a big fish in a small pond, but once she moved to the city she was just another struggling actress.

on cloud nine

天にも昇る心地だ。
on cloud nine
:(old-fashioned, informal) extremely happy
▶︎諸説語源があり、その中でも「International Cloud Atlas （国際雲図帳）」（1985年発行）に紹介された10種類の雲のうち、9番目の積乱雲が一番大きく、下から高い高度にまで伸びる雲であったため、まるでその上に乗っているような気持ちを表している、というものが有力なようです。
Ex) He was on cloud nine after the birth of his son.

Ex) They asked her to leave—in other words she was fired.

wash someone’s hands of …

〜から足を洗う、手を切る
wash your hands of somebody/something
:to refuse to be responsible for or involved with somebody/something
▶︎日本語では「足を洗う」と言いますが、英語では「wash someone’s hands of …」で表現します。ちなみに、「wash someone’s hands」だけだと普通に「手を洗う」だけの意味になるので注意です⚠️
Ex) She has already washed her hands of the project.
（彼女はそのプロジェクトとはもう、手を切っている）

pull someone’s leg

からかう、騙す
pull somebody’s leg
:(informal) to play a joke on somebody, usually by making them believe something that is not true
▶︎日本語に訳すと「足を引っ張る」意味ですが、英語では「からかう、騙す」意味になります。
Ex) It’s not true.I’m just pulling your leg.
