January【ˈdʒænjueri】

:the 1st month of the year, between December and February
▶︎ラテン語で「扉」を意味する「Janua」が由来。ローマ神話の出入口と扉の神で、二つの顔を持つ（行く年と来る年の両方に顔を向けている）

February【ˈfebrueri】

:the 2nd month of the year, between January and March
▶︎「Februa（償いの祭）」の月。古代ローマで行われていた年の終わりの清めの儀式。

March【mɑːrtʃ】

▶︎ローマの戦争と農耕の神「Mars」が由来。戦や農耕は、春から始めたため。火星の「Mars」や、格闘技を表す「martial art」も、この「Mars」から来ています。

:the fourth month of the year, between March and May
▶︎草木が芽吹き、花々が開くことから、ラテン語の「開く」に当たる言葉「aperire」から来ている説と、古代ギリシャの春の女神「Aphorpdite」から来ている説が有力です。

May【meɪ】

:the fifth month of the year, between April and June
▶︎春を司どる豊穣の女神「Maia」が由来。五月一日に、Maiaに供物を捧げられたのが、労働者の日、メーデーの起源。

June【dʒuːn】

:the 6th month of the year, between May and July
▶︎女性を保護する、ローマの女神「Juno」から。ローマ神話の主神「Jupiter」の妻で、女性の結婚を守護する。

July【dʒuˈlaɪ】

:the 7th month of the year, between June and August
▶︎７月生まれの、ローマの指導者「Julius Caesar（ジュリアス・カエサル<シーザー>」に由来。ちなみに、カエサル誕生の時に難産のため、帝王切開手術によって生まれたため、その手術を「Caesarian operation（シーザー式手術）」と言います。

:the 8th month of the year, between July and September
▶︎８月生まれの初代ローマ皇帝「Augustus Caesar」（「Julius Caesar」の甥）に由来。

September【sepˈtembər】

:the 9th month of the year, between August and October
▶︎ラテン語で「７」を意味する「septem」から。ローマの暦上、「March」が最初の月だったため、９月は７番目になりました。

October【ɑːkˈtəʊbər】

:the 10th month of the year, between September and November
▶︎「８」を意味する「oct」から。

▶︎「９」を意味する「novem」から。

:the 12th and last month of the year
